Tag: wildlife
Wildlife encounters with polar bears, king penguins, whales, albatross and seals are constant occurances on an expedition cruise with One Ocean Expeditions.
Visits to penguin colonies provide a unique experience as guests make their way through the abundance of curious penguins. Up-close marine mammal encounters are one of the most awe-inspiring experiences on this planet, even more so at the ends of the earth. All varieties of these polar migratory whales are known to curiously approach the vessel, zodiacs and even sea kayaks. Rich nutrients in the Antarctic water provide an abundant feeding ground for active open jawed leopard seals, crabeater seals, and Weddell seals.
On expedition cruises to South Georgia, guests experience intimate encounters with king penguin rookeries that are home to more than a hundred-thousand birds. The famous albatross is a constant companion on the journey, filling the sky with its incredible wingspan. During those expeditions we visit fur seal colonies that populate the beaches with their pups while elephant seals are busy mating or fighting on the beach.
In the Arctic we frequently encounter the icon of the North – Polar bear, hunting for seals and other protein sources to sustain themselves during the Arctic summer.
