Connecting Communities Across Canada Through Curling

One Ocean Expeditions has partnered with curling tournament ‘Scotties Tournament of Hearts’ this year. The annual Canadian women’s curling championship is taking place in Sydney, Nova Scotia from February 16th through to the 24th, 2019. We are excited to support this event as Cape Breton Island is close to our hearts, with Sydney being the Canadian home port of RCGS Resolute as well as the birthplace of our Managing Director, Andrew Prossin.

“Geographically and culturally the Atlantic coast is an astounding destination that truly defines the Canadian spirit,” said Andrew Prossin, “so does the sport of curling, and we’re excited to be back in Sydney as a sponsor of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.”

At this year’s tournament, spectators will have a chance to win an Arctic trip with One Ocean Expeditions. The grand prize voyage ‘Baffin Island and Greenland Explorer’ will take place in August 2019, with Jill Officer, an Olympian and World Championship curler, joining us onboard. Jill will travel with us as we bring a floor curling set made by Rock Solid Productions to the community of Iqaluit, Nunavut. Floor curling sets are replicas of a traditional curling set but can be played on any smooth surface and do not require ice. The set that we are providing will remain in the North to be shared by several communities with the purpose of exposing youth in these areas to the sport. We are a long time and proud partner of the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) who will help facilitate the use of the set.

“These floor curling sets are a great way to expose people to the sport of curling who wouldn’t otherwise have that opportunity,” says Jill Officer, “They can learn the game and maybe one day have the motivation and desire to bring more curling to their community or get involved in curling in a greater capacity. I’m very much looking forward to bringing the set to the Canadian Arctic and traveling on board with One Ocean Expeditions.”

Event goers can enter the contest for the spectacular Arctic trip giveaway at the tournament, located at the Centre 200 in Sydney, Cape Breton from Friday, February 22nd through to Sunday, February 24th at the One Ocean Expeditions booth. The second-place winner of the contest will be offered the opportunity to donate an additional floor curling set to their community or school of choice – anywhere in Canada.

People are invited to follow the travels of the curling rocks on social media through the #OOErocks campaign. One Ocean Expeditions aims to ignite an appreciation for the sport of curling near and far, bring in new participants, and engage with fans in communities across Canada.
