What is the One Ocean Difference?

One Ocean Expeditions provides extraordinary marine travel experiences in the remote regions of the world. With a range of innovative itineraries in Antarctica, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard, Canada’s East Coast, South and Central America and the Islands of the North Atlantic, a voyage in these destinations is truly a life-changing experience. But what is the One Ocean difference? Here are the top ten reasons our guests choose to travel with One Ocean Expeditions and why you might like to vote for us in USA Today’s Top Adventure Cruise Line contest here! Please note, residents of a European Union member state and individuals accessing the voting website from the European Union are not eligible to submit votes.

Highest Staff to Guest Ratio

With the highest staff to guest ratio (1:4) in the industry on all our vessels, we are able to create small special-interest groups, so our guests can choose the activity that suits them best. We are able to offer options and choices throughout the voyage – possible because of our high staff to passenger ratio – giving our guests the opportunity to choose their own adventure.

Experts On Board

One Ocean Expeditions’ team of expert marine biologists, geologists, polar historians, ornithologists, photographers and artists share their knowledge and passion with guests on every voyage. Through daily educational seminars and compelling fireside conversations, these experts offer spectacular insights into the remote destinations we visit – rich cultures, stories and ancient traditions as well as the many layers of early Polar exploration and history. All share their decades of experience, research findings, discussions and field experience, adding a fascinating, in-depth dimension to our voyages.

Dedication to Science and Education

Over the last decade, we have established long-term, meaningful partnerships with universities and nationally accredited scientific organizations, providing over 120 days per vessel per year, to carefully selected partners such as Ocean Wise, California Ocean Alliance and Oceanites. By combining passenger tourism with meaningful scientific research, our guests are offered every opportunity to be involved with real scientific programs taking place on our voyages. Guests are offered the unique opportunity to learn from and interact with ocean health experts, sharing knowledge and engaging through conversations and presentations, creating more ambassadors for the sensitive regions we visit. We currently support the use of wet lab spaces as well as a dedicated science container lab, the state of the art ‘One Lab’, onboard the RCGS Resolute.

Commitment to Safety

There are no compromises when it comes to the safety of our guests and crew. Our expedition staff have the deepest respect for unpredictable Polar weather and the varying sea and ice conditions in these regions. That respect is apparent in every decision we make. We carry the most extensive inventory of safety equipment on all excursions and require our leaders to undergo vigorous and effective safety training programs. We are well-prepared, so you can relax and enjoy your voyage.

Most Capable Ships in the Industry

One Ocean Expeditions’ well-appointed and unique vessels are considered by many to be the best polar expedition ships in the world. Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov were built to conduct sensitive hydro-acoustic research and science in the polar regions and are now used for expedition cruising. RCGS Resolute, built specifically for passenger expedition cruising, offers the ultimate combination of capability and comfort. All three vessels were built in the iconic shipyard of Rauma, Finland and offer modern stabilization and an unsurpassed ice classification (Lloyds 1A/1AS), compliant with the new Polar Code.

Our Commitment to the Environment

We are committed to running an operation that is a model to the world in terms of ecological sensitivity. We are dedicated to minimizing our impact on the areas we visit. This is evident in our purchasing policies which cover provisioning, supply and waste management. This eco-conscious approach means we travel to remote and pristine destinations in a different way. We are proud to operate using world-class standards and procedures that are a model to other expedition companies. The goal is to allow guests to experience these fragile regions while minimizing any potentially harmful impact on wildlife and natural habitats. We always aim to leave no trace and create ambassadors for these unique destinations.
